Autumn in Mitcham

Autumn in Mitcham

Mitcham is one of those little gems that happens to be close enough to central London (around half an hour commute) and just far out enough that it still feels like a quaint, rural town. Part of what makes the relaxed atmosphere of Mitcham so enticing, is the abundance of green spaces surrounding it.

Mitcham is set in an idyllic, countryside location, nestled amongst the rolling hills of Surrey. You’ll find a beautiful view from almost every angle, but the town is particularly stunning in autumn when the colours come alive. Verdant, stretches of fields and bottle green treetops fade to warming brassy tones. Reddened, russet colours of fallen leaves are scattered over footpaths and reflected in the streams that snake through the parks. It’s particularly beautiful at this time of year but don’t take my word for it! I’ve put together a few suggestions to help you make the most out of autumn in Mitcham.

Deen City Farm

Only a quick fifteen minute walk from Mitcham, Deen City Farm is a great day out for children and adults, especially in autumn when the place is looking particularly inviting! The farm houses a huge range of animals including pigs, sheep, chickens, cows, farm cats, ducks, ferrets, goats, guinea pigs, owls, rabbits, turkeys, a wide range of birds in the aviary, and my favourite – alpacas! And if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, they also offer very affordable horse riding lessons. One of the best things about this farm is that it’s a charity-run business. They operate through donations which in turn gets pumped back into the community by providing educational experiences on farming.

Autumn Walks

Having the multitude of parks, fields and green spaces that Mitcham has, is a hard thing to come by – especially in London! And on a crisp, autumn morning it’s great to have a choice of outside spaces to go for a country walk. For example, you’ve got the vast 10 acres of Figges Marsh to explore, the secluded, tucked away Edenvale Park, and the allotments of Tamworth Farm. But my favourite place to take a stroll, especially during autumn, is Morden Hall Park.

Morden Hall Park

A National Trust site, Morden Hall Park is a place that only dreams are made of. The former deers park is a stunning, natural beauty that in many ways is the heart of the community. There are often community events held here such as watercolour classes, yoga and wood-craft workshops. The park is so sublime that many couples choose here as the perfect backdrop to exchange their vows.

Proper British Pubs

One of the best things to do after a long walk through the parks is to head to your local drinking hole for a warming glass of red! And don’t worry, Mitcham has plenty to choose from. From the trendy restaurant-come-bar The Ravensbury, to the cosy heart warming Gardeners Arms, to the good old-fashioned Kings Arms. There’s a little something to suit everyone’s tastes, and the perfect way to end an autumn day.
