Winner (1)Guildmore has just won the New London Architecture ‘Conservation and Retrofit’ Award from New London Architecture, sponsored by Urban Space Management.  The award was for the BUILT WINNER Poplar Baths project, in E14, designed by Pringle Richards Sharratt for Guildmore Ltd and London Borough Tower Hamlets.

The New London Awards were launched by New London Architecture (NLA) as an annual celebration of London’s best new and proposed projects across all sectors of the built environment.  With 19 projects on the shortlist, this category reflects London’s rich     heritage and high-quality work going into repairing and enhancing it”.

Engin Ertosun, MD Guildmore at commented “We enjoyed restoring this Grade II listed building and conserving the historic building fabric, along with constructing a 10-storey block for social housing. This NLA award means a lot to everyone on the Guildmore team and we would like to extend our thanks to all the judges for recognising our hard work”.

Patrick Quinlan, Design Director at Guildmore stated “Listed buildings are among the more challenging projects that we encounter, but when you can play a part in bringing a derelict building back to life,  they are also the most fulfilling”.

 Thanks to the jury

The international panel of jurors came from Paris, Stockholm, New York and Glasgow and judged projects according to quality of design, innovation, longevity and contribution to placemaking in the city:

  • David J. Burney – Professor of Planning and Placemaking. Pratt Institute School of Architecture, New York City
  • Dominique Alba – Director Atelier Parisien d’Urbanisme, Paris
  • Peter Murray – Chairman, New London Architecture (chair)
  • Monica von Schmalensee – CEO, Partner, White Arkitekter
  • Ricardo Marini – Founder, Marini Urbanismo
  • David Taylor – Editor, New London Architecture

Our Poplar Baths project involved the restoration of an old 1930s London bath house

“ This has been wonderfully restored and brought back to life” said fellow assessor AKT II director, Rob Partridge. The building has many different leisure uses and a sports hall replacing the old pool under a series of arches, with Art Deco detailing retained elsewhere. The original building was about to get demolished before the local community mobilised to prevent it, getting it listed status in the 1960s, meaning it had a chance of redevelopment.
